Helga's diary book review π
Hello everybody and welcome to my first ever blog post here on this blog,
It's very nice to meet you all and I am sure that many of you have come from my other blog - https://jujupage1sblog.blogspot.co.uk . It would be in my best wishes if you could follow me on this blog and my main blog to keep up with the latest. You guys mean the world to me!☺ Now, let's get on to the blog postπ
I was very kindly given this book from my history teacher because I wrote an amazing essay on the intentions of Anne Frank's story. I will be writing a review on her story shortly. However, most of us know that Anne unfortunately didn't live to tell the tale of life in a concentration camp. So this is where Helga comes into play. Helga was only twelve years old when she went to her first ghetto, Terezin. She wrote a diary all about her experiences. She was a Jewish Czech girl who grew up in a place called Prague. The second concentration camp was Auschwitz from which she had not written her diary. After she was transported from camp to camp and eventually liberated, she retrieved her diary hidden in a wall and wrote about Auschwitz.
It's crazy to think that had Anne still survived, she and Helga would have been metres away from each other and yet in the same situation but unable to talk. I think that by reading this book, it really made me realize how pointless every single war is.
Auschwitz, was unexplainable. A complete contrast to Terezin. Although Terezin was filled with disease, at least people could eat descent food and sleep in proper bunks. I was shocked to hear that they were crammed into a cage at Auschwitz and expected to sleep. This contrast I am sure was made to allow Jews to think that concentration camps weren't that bad. I soon learnt that everything was a mind game.
This book definitely deserves a place on every bookshelf. You may not agree with everything in the book but the fact that it gives you such a clear insight to her life at the time is definitely commemorable. I give this book a 5/5.
