Cannery Row book review

Welcome back to another book review,

As you may already know (because I've been babbling on about it) I've been reading Cannery Row by John Steinbeck. Now, I have read one of Steinbeck's books in the past which was 'Of Mice And Men'. I feel like now, I understand his style of writing a lot more. For example, in Of Mice And Men, Steinbeck talks a lot about the scenery in the beginning. At that point, you want to give up. However, you soon realise the read in why he is talking a lot about the scenery and that is because the scenery has a lot of relevance to the story. Now, when I read Cannery Row, Steinbeck talked a lot about the characters. It made me realise that the character's have a lot of importance to the story. I really enjoyed learning about all the different characters like Mack,Eddie,Doc and Dora. They all tie in with the story very well. Mack and the boys try to throw Doc a party and at first it doesn't go to plan but they were persistent and the second time round was a success. I can really empathise with Doc because he forgives Mack and the boys at the first party because he knew they meant well. It was the same in Of Mice And Men, George is really smart and has to look for work with a person like Lennie who is really dumb. I can empathise with that. We need more people like George and Doc.

I rate this book a 4 out of 5. It was very good but it didn't teach me anything amazing like in Helga's diary.

Hello everybody and welcome back to another blog post,  It's been a while since I posted on this second blog. With my GCSEs, I've been struggling to find the time to sit down and read a chapter of a book. Every time I come home from school, there's always something I need to do and when I go to bed, I feel way too tired to read. However the other day, I did find the time to read a bit more of Becoming Michelle Obama and she has genuinely taught me a lesson that I think is very important to share. As a young girl, Michelle was very studious and conscientious. Being from a black family, in a poorer area of Chicago, she often felt she had to prove people wrong and become successful. First impressions of Homage to Catalonia by George Orwell

Hello everybody and welcome back to another blog post, I've been slowly ploughing my way through my other books, that I thought it would be a good time to start a new one. This book I got for my 15th birthday and its the Homage to Catalonia by George Orwell. I've never read his other classics like Animal Farm. I was told that Orwell's writing style was always a bit complicated to understand but reading Homage to Catalonia so far has not been too bad. I had to look up some of the historical context behind this book before reading it since I don't know so much about the Spanish Civil War. All I knew was that the book was based on Orwell's personal experiences as a militiaman (a member of a militia which is an army formed from the civil population in this particular emergency) fighting for the Republican army during this war.
