James Herriot saves a dog! - All Things Bright and Beautiful by James Herriot
Hello everybody and welcome back to another blog post,
I feel like I've been talking a lot about Sarah Helm's book, If This Is A Woman and I've kind of been neglecting some of my other books that I've been reading so today, I'm going to talk about James Herriot. If you don't know already, I'm reading his second memoir, All Things Bright and Beautiful because I really liked his first book and I thought that I would delve into the second. We all know the challenges of being a vet. Especially a Yorkshire country vet like James. Sometimes you have to separate you social life at home, with your working life on farms. This can be very difficult because sometimes country vets get called in the middle of the night to deliver a calf and they have to work during the day to treat a large cattle group for husk. It can be very strenuous work. One thing that I would find the most difficult is when it comes to helping everyday stray pets. On his way back from a farm one day, James discovered a lonely dog, wondering on its own by the road. Worried about it, he picked up the dog and realised there was no collar and it looked as though it had been rapidly taken off so he decked to take the dog back to the practice. There he was given food by Helen, Jame's wife, and he was also given a quick check up. For the rest of his stay there, he was loved by Helen and him very dearly and they found it difficult to give the dog up to the kennels. However, the next day, James drove to the dog shelter and dropped the dog off there. Due to the fact that he'd grown attached to it, he revisited the dog and found that he was adopted off to a lovely home. For me, personally, I would find that really difficult to do because I wouldn't want to give up something that I've saved. However, the key thing that all vets must learn is to put aside their emotions about whatever situation they're in for the greater good. That's what James did and the dog was adopted by loving and caring owners who had more time and space in their home to look after it than James did.
Just thought I'd share this story with you today. What else makes a good vet? Let me know in the comments below and I'll be sure to reply to them. I ♡ hearing from you!
See you next time,
Bye,
XOX, Juliette
