Books I'll be taking to Portugal

Hello everybody and welcome back to another blog post,

Tomorrow, I'll be going on holiday to Portugal with my family. We will be staying in a small house in the mountains. There's a swimming pool and lots of places to go on walks but there will be no WiFi so I'm going to bring my own entertainment. Lots and lots of books. I feel like I haven't been reading as much as I should have been reading this summer so this is a great time to catch up. Without further ado, let's get on with the blog post.
  • The first book I'll be taking with me is Call of the Wild and White Fang by Jack London. It consists of two books in one and I'm hoping to complete both of them. I've begun reading Call of the Wild and I must admit, it isn't my favourite because it lacks description and instead of you figuring out what the story is trying to say, it tells it for you which makes the story boring and less interesting. However, the storyline is good as its set in the height of the Gold Rush and the young St Bernard and Scottish Collie cross puppy, Buck, is snatched from his pampered life in California and becomes a feral beast. I hope I get through this book so I can then move onto the second.
  • The second book I'll be taking with me is If This Is A Woman by Sarah Helm. I got this book whilst out on a trip to a males' concentration camp called Sachsenhausen which is near Berlin. I went to visit Berlin on a history trip and it consisted of this particular visit. I found the visit really interesting and fascinating. There was a book store there that you could visit if you wanted and this is where I got the book from. It's about a female concentration camp called Ravensbrück which was set up just before the war. I began reading this and I'm up to page 100 but there are quite a few pages and the font is really small so it will take me quite a while to finish but I will get there! I like reading about what truly happened in these places because often we talk about the death camps like Auschwitz Birkenau in Poland which killed a significant amount of the Jewish population. However, we never really talk about the Communists and socialists and the Jehovah's Witnesses that were suffering in these much smaller concentration camps like Ravensbrück and Sachsenhausen. There stories matter too so I feel like its really important to listen to what happened to them as well.
  • The third book I'll be taking is Large Perle by John Steinbeck. This book was originally in English but was translated into French in this copy. I really want to improve my reading in French and this book is great because if I don't understand something, I can look to the second page beside the French, which is in English. This book is about Kino and his wife Juana and there son Coyotito, who gets bitten by a scorpion by accident. They decide to take him to the doctor but because of their racial background, they're not allowed to get the help they need. Due to the fact that Coyotito is really suffering and is getting significantly I'll by the day, Kino desperately goes out diving for a pearl that when rubbed on the bite, can cure his son. This is a great book and although I do not understand all of it word for word, the story is simple and easy to follow. I'm already up to page 93!
  • The last book I'll be taking with me is Becoming Michelle Obama by Michelle Obama herself. My mum was gifted this book by my grandmother Tsyoko after she had read it and recommended it to her. My mum wasn't entirely sure that she would like it because to her, Michelle Obama seemed like a slightly overrated person. However, when she began reading it, she couldn't put it down. My mum is a fast reader but she read this 421 page book in a matter of days. Judging by what she said, because I haven't read it yet myself, it sounded pretty interesting. Apparently, she came from a fairly poor background where she really had to work hard in order to achieve the things that she wanted to achieve in life. After marrying Barack and he became president of the United States, and she became the first lady, her life changed dramatically. Once they had children, it was very difficult for them to maintain a normal life since they had to be constantly accompanied by body guards, everywhere they went. However some of the children, because they'd spent so much time with them, made friends with the body guards and they even got them to push them on the swings! Barack and his wife also had to have extra cars around them when travelling around to make it difficult for the public to know which car he was in. It all sounds very interesting and I look forward to reading it.

What books have you read recently this summer? Let me know in the comments below and I'll be sure to reply to them. I ♡ hearing from you!

See you next time,

Bye,

XOX, Juliette
