All about James Herriot

Hello everybody and welcome back to another blog post,

As most of you know, I'm currently reading All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot and I thought that it would be fitting to give you some facts about who he is. Hope you enjoy!

James Alfred Wight OBE, was born on the 3rd of October 1916 and died on the 23rd of February 1995. Well known by his pen name James Herriot, he was a writer and veterinary surgeon, who had years of experience in the veterinary industry. He wrote a series, which I'm currently reading, consisting of stories about animals and their owners. A spawn of series of movies and television series, which originated from his auto-biographical works, beginning with If Only They Could Talk, which started in 1970.

Herriot was born in Sunderland, County Durham, England, to James and Hannah Bell Wight. The Wights moved from Brandling Street, Sunderland to Glasgow, Scotland from which James took up work as a ship plater and pianist for a local cinema and his wife became a singer and dressmaker. Hannah returned to Sunderland to bring back her son who was only 3 weeks old. Herriot attended Yoker Primary School and Hillhead High School, later in his life. His father attained a passion for Sunderland Football Club, and in 1992, was named a Life President of the club.

James qualified to become a veterinary surgeon at Glasgow Veterinary College in 1939 at the age of 23. After a brief job at a veterinary service in Sunderland in January 1940, James went to work in a rural area in the Yorkshire Dales, known as Thirsk or known as 'Skeldale House' in his memoirs. He remained at the practice and became an asset to Yorkshire for the rest of his life.

In the future, he was to marry Joan Catherine Anderson Danbury, or known as Helen Alderson in his memoirs, and then have to children by the name of James Alexander and Rosemary. James was the eldest, born in 1943, and Rosemary (Rosie) was the youngest, born in 1947.

Have you ever heard of James Herriot? Let me know in the comments below and i'll be sure to reply to them. I ♡ hearing from you!

See you next time,

Bye,

XOX, Juliette
